Trauma Counseling

Are You Struggling to Feel Safe and Whole After a Trauma?

Do your days feel harder in the aftermath of a traumatic event? Are you struggling from emotional shock and are unsure of how to cope with it? Do you have a hard time escaping painful memories and just want to finally be free from the nightmares, shame and fear?

Perhaps you went through a traumatic experience in childhood, and it continues to affect your daily life. Maybe you feel like no matter how hard you try to push down the thoughts and feelings related to what happened, they keep coming up when you least expect them. You may feel continuously drawn back into the past, which makes it nearly impossible to live a productive life. Do you have a hard time processing what happened in the first place?

Or, maybe you continue to relive your trauma due to various triggers. Does it prevent you from doing your job well or from keeping a job in the first place? Does it prevent you from spending time with the people you love because you’re worried you’ll be thrown back into a terrified state?

Alternately, are you a parent of a child or teen who is suffering after a traumatic experience? Do you feel like no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to give them the support or the help that they need to heal?

Regardless of where you stand with trauma, do you wish you or your child could find a way to process painful memories and move forward with a new sense of peace?

You Are Not Alone

As painful as trauma can be, it’s important to know that you are not alone. Even if it seems that everyone around you is moving through life with ease, there are countless people dealing with trauma, sometimes without realizing it.

Like so many others, you may go through your days trying to treat each moment like business as usual, but in the back of your mind, you silently replay past experiences. Trauma can feel like carrying a heavy emotional weight without knowing how to release it.

There’s also no one definition for trauma, and no set of rules for what kind of experiences will have lasting effects. What matters most is how you are effected by a particular event or situation, and how you move forward from it. Hardships such as childhood wounds, unhealthy relationship wounds, any form of abuse, the loss of a loved one, the loss of your home or career, a sudden negative health diagnosis or even a painful divorce can all be considered traumatic events—everyone experiences life events differently. However, moving forward after the event is where most people get stuck, and understandably so.

It may be that your child or teen experienced a traumatic event, and you feel helpless as you watch them try to live a normal life. Along with many other reasons, childhood trauma is difficult to cope with because, at a young age, it can be much more difficult to process, understand and move forward after an experience turns your world upside down. It’s very common for unresolved trauma to follow children into their adult lives.

Fortunately, trauma therapy can help you or your child move forward from the pain and start living a life of joy and fulfillment.

Trauma Counseling Can Help You Move Past The Pain

At Couples And Family Counseling Center, we work hard to provide relief to clients who have suffered through trauma. We offer a warm and compassionate environment where you or your child can feel safe and supported to work through the pain. Your past doesn’t have to rule your life anymore—you can live with new freedom from the trauma you’ve experienced.

Although it can be painful to revisit past distress, it can be extremely helpful to take the time to really understand what you’ve survived. With the support of a skilled, compassionate guide, you can learn how to cope and better manage difficult memories and sensations. With deeper self-understanding and healing tools, you can live the life you want.

In my practice, we use mindfulness and cognitive-based approaches to help you work through and move forward from your trauma. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help you better understand how your behaviors and experiences relate to your thoughts. In trauma treatment, that means we can help you understand how your trauma is affecting your thoughts about yourself and your world. By changing how you think about your trauma, you can learn that it doesn’t need to control your behaviors. You can work through it and live a fuller life.

Remember, trauma does not have to govern your life, or your child’s life. With help from experienced professionals, you or your child can release long-held fear and navigate the world with greater ease.

You May Have Questions Or Concerns About Trauma Counseling for Children, Teens, and Adults…

I won’t be able to get past this…

Although it may seem impossible now, you can move past your pain. Trauma isn’t something that just simply “goes away”—it is something that must be worked through and given the time and space to heal, which is exactly what we aim to do.We work hard to give you that space where you can feel safe and comfortable enough to be vulnerable with your experience, which can lead to real positive change.

I don’t want to relive my traumatic event…

The idea of reliving your traumatic experience in therapy can leave you unbelievably scared and discouraged, but it’s important to realize that you don’t have to relive your trauma to move forward, and the goal of therapy is healing, not pain. We may revisit the event as a way to help you better understand it and work through it, but then we can begin to let go of it.

Coping with trauma is difficult if you don’t have the tools to do so; counseling can provide you with those tools and skills that will help you let go and move forward. With help, you can be free from that suffering and live with a sense of freedom and peace from your past.

Trauma therapy seems just too difficult…will it even really work?
